Asbestos was widely used in the past because of its many beneficial physical properties. This substance was used in highly concentrated form in materials required for heat insulation, fire prevention or sound insulation which were not subject to any significant static demands (for example in sprayed asbestos, seals, boards, cords). Asbestos was used at lower levels for reinforcing materials, to improve friability and flexing properties (for example in asbestos cement) or to increase the elasticity and/or viscosity (for example of paints, glues, seals, road pavings).
VDI guideline 3866 consists of the basic Part 1 on measurement planning and taking and preparing the material samples, and 3 following parts on determination of asbestos by IR spectroscopy, phase-contrast microscopy and scanning electron microscopy
