5. Internationale wissenschaftliche Konferenz zu nachhaltigen Bewirtschaftungssystemen
(Weiterbildung&Seminare)
Wann? 05.11.2008 - 7.11.08

Was? We cordially invite you to participate in the 5th International Scientific Conference on sustainable farming systems ECOMIT which will be held from 5 to 7 November 2008 in Piesťany, Slovakia.

The Conference is being organised by the Slovak Agricultural Research Centre - Research Institute of Plant Production Piesťany and the Slovak Association for Sustainable Agriculture "SASA" in cooperation with The Ministry of Agriculture of the Slovak Republic, The Wageningen University and Research Centre the Netherlands, The European Conservation Agriculture Federation (ECAF), The International Society of Organic Agriculture Research (ISOFAR), The Institute of Organic Agriculture (IOL), The Town Piesťany, The Piesťany Town Cultural Centre and Slovak No-till club.

Agriculture activities are very sensitive to climate and weather conditions. Climate change affects agriculture and agriculture contributes to climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that fossil energy use, change in land use and the emission of nitrous oxide and methane from agriculture are the major causes of climate change. Moreover climate change will have major effects on food production. Sustainable management of the soil is a key factor in mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The adoption of sustainable agricultural methods in general and specifically soil management is important to the total process of sustainable development. Agricultural production must increase as the number of mouths to feed continues to rise. This has to be achieved largely on existing agricultural land, using methods that do not deplete the Earth's resources or cause lasting environmental damage.
The purpose of the conference is to discuss the state of the art in the area of analysis and management of soil and climate change related risks in different areas with the special emphasis on agriculture.

The principal objectives of the conference will be:
To present and promote research results and experience in the field of sustainable agriculture with emphasis on soil and climate change.
Organic farming, conservation, low input and integrated agriculture are strategies to cope with the challenges we are facing. Combination of these various strategies is a potential answer to the challenges agriculture is facing. The conference objective is to bring together experiences and research results of different sustainable approaches in agriculture.
The conference will provide the opportunity to exchange experiences and the latest knowledge and research results in the field of sustainable agriculture among the scientists and researchers from western, central and eastern European countries, from different institutions and from different research areas (organic, low input, integrated, conservation agricultural research).
The conference is expected to create an "information bridge" among European scientific and research communities which will contribute to the strengthening of partnerships and scientific collaboration.

The conference includes plenary sessions, six scientific parallel sessions (1 Plants and soil, 2 Agriculture and climate change, 3 Water efficiency and water management, 4 Mechanical soil management, 5 Soil health and soil biodiversity, 6 Energy production and energy use), posters presentations and excursions designed to show delegates recent developments in the area of sustainable farming systems research in the 21st century.

Your participation will contribute to raising the scientific level of the conference and we look forward to seeing you in Piesťany in November 2008.
